“The children have always liked drives in the car, but I believe they’re enjoying the boat more. What do you think?”

Clever Julien, sticking to the children as the topic of conversation, never once touching on anything personal, never referring to that scene in Raoul’s bedroom yesterday when she’d been caught holding her husband in her arms.

“Since this is all so new to me, I have no way of knowing such a thing, but they do seem content.”

All three infants lay propped in their carryalls on the floor behind Julien, who handled the controls of the sleek twenty-one-foot ski boat. Avoiding even a glance in his direction, Tracey watched her babies play with their hands and bite on a few rattles Julien had brought along from their toy bin.

Besides their life preservers and stretchy suits with feet, they wore sky blue cotton sweaters. Tracey pulled up the hoods to cover their ears and head. Only their precious faces were exposed to the warm afternoon sun that took the fall nip out of the air.

When she wasn’t feeding them or changing their diapers, she’d reach for them one at a time and cuddle them. As they cruised around the placid lake, she’d point out a famous landmark like the medieval Château de Chillon or the water jet in Geneva’s harbor.

At one place near the shoreline at the Château de Clarens, an old fossil of a fortress, Julien cut the engine to get himself something to eat from the cooler. The cook had prepared mouth-watering quiches, tartes aux framboises, and she’d supplied them with Grapillon, a grape drink Tracey adored.

While her eyes scanned the hillsides teeming with vineyards full of ripe grapes ready to be harvested, he fixed a plate for Tracey, then himself, and they ate in what must have looked like companionable silence. But inside, she was a seething mass of nerves.

In an effort to break the tension, she said, “You were very generous to the nannies last night when you told them that we were letting them go. I’m sure they’re grateful, Julien.”

He swallowed another tart before replying, “There’s not enough money in this world to recompense them for mothering the children until you could take over. But I have to admit that for their sakes, I’m glad they’ve been forced to move on. Jeanette, particularly, was too attached to Raoul.”

Tracey nodded. “I sensed as much yesterday. He’s so sweet.” Her voice choked up and her eyes filled as she looked at her children. “They’re all so sweet.”

“They’re perfect, and today I feel as if I’m the luckiest man alive,” he murmured with gutwrenching emotion.

“Julien,” she blurted, anxious to cut him off before he led them into deeper waters, “I—I hope you won’t mind that I called Isabelle early this morning and—”

“Why in heaven’s name would I mind?” he bit out unexpectedly, revealing that he wasn’t as in control as she had imagined. “This is your home now, and she’s your sister after all.”

Clutching her hands together, she said, “You didn’t let me finish.
